Blog 1: AP Lang

    Out of all the compliments in the world, “pretty” is probably my least favorite. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not an insult. But it’s… basic. Like handing someone a plain cracker when there’s a whole charcuterie board sitting right there. There’s so much more to me than how I look. I’m smart. I’m strong. I’m loyal. I’m kind. I can even parallel park on the first try sometimes. Yet people skip all of that and go straight to “pretty,” like it’s the default setting.     One time in math class, I couldn’t figure out a problem (okay, more like most of the problems), and this girl looked at me and said, “Well, you’re lucky you’re pretty.” Not a joke. Dead serious. And all I could think was: wow, thanks for reminding me that I apparently peaked at my face. Yeah, I may suck at math, but I’m still a better person than you’ll ever be, and that equation always checks out.     Being called “pretty” isn’t always the compliment people think it is.
